I always get butterflies in my stomach right before a photoshoot. It's definitely a little bit of nerves mixed with a whole lot of excitement for the magic that is going to be created. This was my first photoshoot that I was going to be doing on the streets of Philadelphia and I was super anxious to get started. I HATE driving in Philly. I can navigate around the streets of NYC without a problem but put me in Philadelphia and I feel like I just got my driver's license.
We met Makayla and her mom, Christie, at the Bellevue Hotel parking garage on a gorgeous Sunday evening. We headed down the elevator and came to our first spot we were going to shoot at. It was an old red telephone booth like the kind you would find in London. This was the perfect place to take some test pictures and get Makayla comfortable in front of the camera. I know that it can sometimes be very intimidating to hear, "stand right there, put your hand on your hip, grab the dress, tilt your head up, look over my shoulder, smile, but not too big, and relax". It wasn't long before we were getting some great images.
I almost forgot to mention that Makayla was a former student of mine when I was a teacher. Anyway, we headed down the street to this awesome strip of sidewalk that is in the middle of the street. The background of the pictures was going to be City Hall. This was so much fun to shoot! Makayla took direction really well and we captured some pretty awesome images. I wasn't expecting the amount of people to stop us and ask us what we were doing, to scream out their cars as they drove by, or honk their horns and give the thumbs up. People whipped out their cell phones and took pictures of me taking pictures of Makayla. I really couldn't blame them. She looked stunning in her royal blue dress by Bentley and Lace designs.
As the sun began to set, the car lights came on, and more traffic filled the streets, the shots just kept getting better and better. I could have stayed at that location for hours trying out different poses but I had tons of other spots I wanted to hit up before the sun was completely gone. We walked all around Center City in Philadelphia and grabbed shots in front of buildings, construction zones, and on a great staircase where one of my favorite pictures was taken.
CONFETTI. I thought this was going to be easy! The wind, however, did not want to cooperate and we had a blast trying over and over again to get the perfect shot. I think we all ate our fair share of confetti by the time this was over and we were all covered head to toe with it. I am currently still finding pieces of it randomly around my house. It's in my camera bag, I found it in my sheets, and the dogs LOVE to spot individual flecks of it and bark at it. With that, the confetti pictures came out great and I LOVE the one where Makayla has her eyes closed and there is confetti EVERYWHERE!
We then made our way to this awesome water feature at this park they are constructing right next to City Hall. We were able to get some great pictures around this area where water was shooting out of the ground.
This photoshoot in Philly was SO MUCH FUN! 2 hours and 1200 pictures later, I think we had a successful trip and a very happy girl. I can't wait to book some more shoots here and see what new magic can be created!
